Marlberry, it was a great thing you did by sending your letter. That's one thing all of us can do. If we remain silent, our views will be ignored. If all of us get louder & send letters - to restaurants, to meeting organizers (if food is served at a meeting), and letters to the editor, we'd make progress faster than ever.

I wonder if it makes sense to write letters to groups like the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, etc. (These groups seem to be focused on *prescribing* our way out of the obesity crisis. Not surprisingly since they are essentially arms of the pharmaceutical industry.

I am going to write a letter to the American Cancer Society, though. (These letters work only when you include a lot of carbon copy recipients, like a cc to your newspaper, Medical Society, etc.). There was is a festival where the ACS has a booth, raising money by selling . . . Hot Dogs!!!! (I got a photo!!).

Thanks for Part 3. I enjoy watching these....nice, positive, and uplifting

Yesim, it may be true what you said about the chef's remark but since he has a cute accent and he seems to be a great chef, I forgive him. lol

Why can't there be a Lifestyle program like this near where I live and for everyone else too?
Aren't they lucky?!

RE: Blood test results

Thanks for the replies, Susan. I try to eat whole wheat pasta or pasta with added fiber. However, I might have had some guacamole (my DH makes a great one) after the Kickstart program ended and that might have affected my triglycerides, who knows. However, I lost a total of 25 lb since December and feeling much better, except last week when I had a strange headache that moved around my head (I am occasional migraine sufferer) and made me weak as well gave me some nausea. I don't know if I am lacking something or it was just a bug....

Also, yesterday when we went to a steakhouse for the Mothe's Day dinner, I had fries with my veggie burger as I couldn't have the stuffed portabella because it already had the cheese mixed in its stuffing. However, I didn't eat all of the fries :-)

RE: Blood test results

Even though triglycerides are a fat, they can go up when you eat processed carbs (white bread, pastas, cold cereals, pastries, etc.). I don't know much about your diet, but if processed flours are in there a good deal, I would eat more whole grains like brown rice, oats, quinoa, etc.

Also, when your LDLs fall, it's not unusual that your HDLs will fall too. This phenomenon is what Dr. Dean Ornish refers to as, "If you don't have as much garbage (LDLs), you don't need as many garbage trucks (HDLs)." Remember, your HDLs are "good" only because they are poised to leave your body. You really want your LDLs to fall more than you want your HDLs to rise.

Hats off. I think you are doing great! I hope you feel better too.

Blood test results

March 14, 2011(mostly vegetarian) vs. April 25, 2012 (almost vegan started in early March, but being vegan since the Kickstart )

Cholestrol: 160 mg/dL. ................ 151
Triglyceride 82 mg/dL. ................ 103
HDL. 46 (I thought it was higher.......43
LDL, calculated 98 ................ 87
Triglyceride 82 .............. 103

Chol/HDL ratio. 3.48 ............,... 3.51

Relative risk (given in the results )
1/2 avg. risk. 3.27
Average risk. 4.44
Etc.

B12. Wasn't checked ............... 554 pg/ mL (range given as > 211)

I need to increase my HDL for sure as it wasn't that great to start with, but I am disappointed with the fact that my triglycerides went up :-( I didn't eat too many nuts, so I am not so sure why to have higher triglyceride My DH kind of remembered reading something about eating too much beans, but it didn't make sense to us. Any ideas?
Thank you for taking the time to share this, I know it will be helpful for the new Kickstarters and people struggling. I was at a loose end, so I was re-reading the various messages on this April forum. I think you really nailed this one.

I totally agree, Mari.
And yes, Spindoctor, thank you for weighing in. I've taken your advice to heart and have drafted a letter. You're right to be angry about this, Mari. And it's not the first time I've heard about something like this. There's a video on youtube where the same sort of thing happens. But they were more subtle aboout it, I guess because Rip Esselstyn was there on the panel.

The deal seems to be: "we'll show your film, but only if we get to trash it afterwards."

RE: recipes for picky toddlers
Wow! Thanks Bugsmom for all that wonderful info. I'm copying and pasting it and emailing it to my kids. I'm glad I'm not raising a vegan kid--it was hard enough just raising our son while eating a wholesome natural foods diet. I was so ridiculed and friends and family took great delight in feeding him junk when we weren't around. But that was a long time ago and people are so much more enlightened now. Still it would be so much easier for them to be just vegetarian instead of vegan when the kids go to other people's homes or to parties. I think they're being very low key though when they go to other's homes. I don't think they worry about eating ice cream or cake, etc. I remember my dil asking me when the first one was just a baby what I thought she should do when she was old enough to go to birthday parties and I told her to "let her eat cake"! So they're doing it and I'm proud of them. Thanks again. You have some great thoughts and suggestions.
You're quite welcome. We started moving in this direction when our son was around 9 - first wee steps were things like moving from liquid dairy milk to plant milk, cutting out beef and pork, etc. Poultry, fish, and other dairy (cheese, yogurt, sour cream, etc) and eggs were still in the mix. And so on, little by little - then I saw Dr. Barnard on a PBS program and bought Reversing Diabetes and found the kickstart back in fall 2010. BUT through it all, everyone in the family had full choice in how they eat - we didn't require son to cut out anything. If he wanted ham and cheese sandwiches, okay, I'll get ham and cheese BUT I'll get the BEST quality I can manage to find and fit in the budget. Ditto for hot dogs which were one of his go-to snacks (cold, straight from the fridge for an on-the-go kid) - together we went to the market and read ALL the packages and found options for the ones he liked best that had the best ingredients we could find (stuff with lower sodium, skinless - he doesn't like the texture with the casing kind, minimal 'other' ingredients, etc). Over time, though, hot dogs, burgers, ham sandwiches and such just left - I'd ask if he wanted me to get ham, hot dogs, tuna and he'd say "do we have chickpeas for "not tuna" salad?" Which we always did (or had on the grocery list anyhow) and he'd be fine with that. When we're out and about, we all eat as we need/choose. Hubby and I both kinda 'slipped' a bit but have started working back into the lower fat vegan eating style because we could see and feel the difference.

Love this response, Spindoctor. It's great to have you aboard, Sir.

Unfortunately most doctors have little knowledge about nutrition and yet they feel comfortable being on an "expert" panel discussing a film like this.

Here's an interesting video from Dr Greger's website that shows what happens in the courts when someone (Dr McDougall I believe) suggested increased mandatory nutrition training for doctors:

Thanks for the comments, everyone. SLT, you made me laugh. I'm sure my blood pressure was in the unhealthy range last night!

I was hoping someone has the number for the Dalai Lama. I need an appointment quick so I can gets some tips on maintaining inner peace during times like last night! In the meantime, Madeline, you're quote will help. :)

The more I mull it over the more I remember things that were said, like this gem: "McDonald's used to use beef fat to fry their french fries but now they use vegetable oil. Actually, the beef fat was healthier!" (no, I'm not kidding!!)

I think what really got me was the ignorance that "this is an American film so focuses on American problems. It's not necessarily the same here." (in Canada). Give me a flippin' break.

I took my friend to this screening who is very overweight and has MS. I have tried to tell her what I have learned over the years and to get her to join Kickstart etc. (she joined Dr. Bernstein instead, lost 90 lbs and has regained it all). I thought this film was a great way for her to hear the message from experts - not just me. And then that panel opened their big mouths and spewed out all that manure....

I felt sorry for the audience. Some people got up and left but for others, clearly not knowing the truth and likely believing these doctors, I'm sure confusion reigns.

I love that Ghandi saying. I have to agree - hearing grumbles may mean we are closer to change than if there were a silent reaction to such films!

RE: Forks Over Knives - screening

Oh my.

There is a well known Gandhi quote which may help. It goes something like " First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then you win.". Truth always wins in the end. Just keep being the change and people will notice. But do take action. I wonder if the clinic was fully aware of these doctors' attitudes. I went to a presentation on vitamin supplements put on by a known vegan group recently in my small town. The presenter was a progressive chiropractor. Turns out he subscribes to the blood type theory, which promotes that I (O negative) should eat meat. I think a lot of people were surprised!

Another thing to keep in mind is that there is a commonality among all of the competing food trends, including paleo and vegan, and that is to eat real food. If we all completely cut the food like substances that get sold as food, we would be better off. Vegan would be the next step for many people. These doctors were only showing their ignorance. It is too bad, considering that a public opportunity to educate was lost. How did the public respond? Were they defensive about their SAD lifestyle and relieved by the answers, or did they leave still thinking about what they had seen in the movie?
